One of my fellow green friends has started a new green business directory. It’s a really cool concept that is different from all of the other green business directories. It is called Green Biz Local (http://greenbizlocal.com/).

This is different from other green local business directories because it is truly location based. Almost all green business search websites claim to offer location-based results, but they don’t.

I’ll provide an example to explain what I mean. Let’s say you are looking for a sushi restaurant in Alpharetta, GA. You go to your a business directory and, set your location to Alpharetta, GA, and enter “sushi” in the search box. When your results pop up, you find a place that looks good; but then see that the restaurant is located in south Atlanta. For my readers that are not familiar with Georgia, south Atlanta is about 30 miles from Alpharetta. With our lovely Atlanta traffic, this trek could take over an hour.

Q. Why did the local business directory give you a place in another city when you had specified “Alpharetta” as your location?

A. There are three possible answers. 1) Ad sales cause corruption in the results. 2) Dirty SEO companies are manipulating the search results. 3) The website doesn’t really care about providing relevant results. It’s probably the first one. Kudzu and Citysearch are great examples of this problem. When you type in “sushi”, the first 3-5 results are whomever is paying the website the most money per month. It’s great that these companies have large advertising budgets and that the websites are raking in cash…for them. It doesn’t help who really matters - You.

Q. How is Green Biz Local a different kind of green business directory?

A. Green Biz Local is REALLY location-based. When you go to the website, it uses your IP address to find your location and automatically displays it on the map. You can enter your city, or even your exact address, and they display a map with a dot exactly on your location. All of the businesses around you will show up as other red or green dots. Now you can see exactly where everything is. You can click on the dots and a balloon pops up showing the company name, description, and photo gallery. You can zoom in, zoom out, or even drag the map to see what else is around.

What is so great about Green Biz Local’s business model is that it isn’t built for corruption due to ad sales. Every registered business gets a red dot for free. The only upgrade available is a nominal $20 annual fee. This upgrade is an expanded listing that offers a company description and photo gallery. I think that there are plans to add user reviews to this upgrade.

This is pretty innovative - Check it out Green Biz Local
